Council's huge bill for rubbish left on streets

RUBBISH dumped on the streets of Rutland has rocketed to a staggering 141 tonnes over four months.
It costs £48.75 per tonne to clean up and will cost the council £501,120 this year.
Between April and August last year the amount of rubbish collected by Rutland County Council reached 141 tonnes – up from 93 tonnes the year before.

ple are being urged to join a special clean-up campaign where youth groups, parish councils, businesses and schools are being challenged to help ditch the dirt cluttering up our streets.
A council spokesman said: "The autumn clean-up will start on Monday, November 3 and run for two weeks.
"During that time the council will target litter from cars, flytipping, abandoned vehicles, on the roads, in the streets and in the countryside."
Everything from chewing gum and cigarettes to dog dirt and graffiti will be cleaned up. Volunteers will be able to borrow cleaning equipment from the council including wheelie bins, litter grabbers, gloves, high visibility vests, bin bags and brushes.
Coun Janine Rodger (Con), who is responsible for environmental issues, said: "I hope residents take the opportunity to get involved with the campaign and that the clean-up will help people to develop a sense of pride towards our clean county."
