Gratitude for stamps response
Published Date:

On behalf of the Rotary Club of Stamford St Martins I would like to pass on a very big thank you to the Mercury for its help with our Stamp out Leprosy campaign.
You recently reported that we had reached the 250,000 mark and were now aiming for our next target of half a million stamps.
In response to this article a very large bag of stamps was taken into the Town Hall by an anonymous donor.
As well as containing the recent photograph that you published of our collection there were 8,602 stamps form all round the world.
A wonderful boost to our collection.
We have now reached a total of 304,285 having recently delivered 290,000 stamps to the Leprosy Mission in Waterlooville so that they can start raising money to help fight Leprosy which is found among the poorest people in the world.
Among the 8,602 stamps I found two stamps that had on them the date of my birth (70 years ago).
One was from the Gold Coast and the other from Bechuanaland.
I wonder if any readers can identify the date on the stamp and can tell us what was the event they were commemorating and where Bechuanaland is.
