Re: Development in the Deepings. I agree strongly with Russell Hall (letters, June 6) about the undesirability of the possible development on the land between the Bowling Green and 53 Spalding Road in Deeping St James.
We most definitely do not want further ribbon building along the north side of that road, especially on a green field site.

It is very unfortunate that a housing development was allowed further along that side, albeit on a brown field site that w
as an eyesore.

Building on the north side of the Spalding Road is outside the agreed future development area in the Deepings.

The land is at present an agricultural, green field site and an attractive open space and should remain that way.

I note that the outline planning application as submitted on June 20 says it is for a mixed development of an arts centre, day centre etc and is non residential.

This is misleading, as the outline plan definitely includes housing, (96 houses?) from the sum of the profits of which the community projects might be funded.

At this stage, developers often offer "affordable" housing, but by whose criteria is the accommodation "affordable" and how likely is it that changes will be sought at a later stage?

As a focal point for the community this would be absolutely in the wrong place, out on the margin of the villages, not in the centre of the Deepings at all.

Any such new facility should be on the available land within the structure plan, bounded by Godsey Lane, Outgang Road and Linchfield Road (for example, behind the supermarket), to make a new centre for the whole combined community.

I agree with Russell Hall that we should have a vigorous debate about whether any further housing is needed in the Deepings, what community facilities we need, where they should be, and how they should be funded.
